Friday April 7, 2000
Two workshops will be offered on Friday, April 7. Unfortunately, you will need to choose between them. Each is offered by one of our Physics Teacher Resource Agents* (PTRA), and there is a small fee. The fee covers materials and any extra goes to support the PTRA program nationally and locally. If your school pays directly, the cost is $30, check payable to AAPT. If you pay yourself, the cost is $12, again check payable to AAPT.
Please respond directly to the instructor of the workshop you wish to take. There is limited space in each of the workshops due to the space available. Deadline for signups is March 31.
The Charm of Strange and Other Quarks
Andria Erzberger is offering a Particles Workshop from 9-3. Learn about quarks and leptons and the four forces. Get background information for the afternoon tour and talk at SLAC. Find the mass of the top quark by using conservation of momentum and do other classroom activities. You'll receive a free CD and charts.
This workshop will be held on campus in Varian Hall. Directions are posted below for parking. The workshop will adjourn to a tour of SLAC after a day spent learning about the smallest particles of the universe.
Contact Andria to sign up for this workshop. Her e-mail address is alerzberger@lbl.gov
Computer/Calculator Interfacing in the Lab
Clarence Bakken will offer a Computer/Calculator Interfacing Workshop from 9-3. It will be held in the Varian Building, also, and will feature hands-on work with the new LabPro from Vernier Software and CBL2 from Texas Instruments. Gain hands-on experience with computer and calculator interfaces in both familiar and new labs. Learn how powerful this technique can be to investigate physical laws. And learn about a new Barometer Story. Door prizes!
The workshop will adjourn to a tour of SLAC which will put you in the right place for our Friday night social and educational event.
Contact Clarence to sign up for this workshop. His e-mail address is cbakken@pausd.palo-alto.ca.us
* Other PTRA's in Northern California are Bruce Anderson, Art Fortgang, Mike Ugawa and Paul Robinson. The PTRA team conducts a series of six workshops each year in the San Francisco/Oakland area for high school physics and physical science teachers.
This popular Saturday afternoon workshop is intended for teachers who are either new to teaching physics and/or those who have been at it for a while but still feel like they're new! All new teachers will be networked with experienced teachers. The workshop includes valuable teaching tips, goodie bags, raffles where everyone wins, question and answer panels, popcorn, and more! In addition, a box lunch will be provided to the first 20 participants who sign up for the New Teacher Workshop.
Teachers interested in attending the New Teacher Workshop, or teachers interested in presenting at this workshop, please contact Paul Robinson, laserpablo@aol.com
Rick Pam, our host, has recommended that people park at SLAC (for free vs. $8 parking pass) and take the shuttle to campus (also free). SLAC is located on Sand Hill Road between freeway 280 and Stanford. General directions will be posted soon. From the schedule which is reprinted below, the best time to arrive at SLAC will be before 8:15. That will put you on campus (use the Gates stop) around 8:30. From there, go west a short distance to the Varian Physics Lab building. We will be in the basement, rooms B106 or B109.
We will schedule the workshops so that people can get up to SLAC, again via the shuttle, in time for the early afternoon tour. If the tour starts at 4:00, leaving at 3:30 will get you there with time to spare.Updated 3/5/00
