New Teachers
PTSOS: Support for new physics teachers
Question: What group is represented by five letters plus four dedicated teachers, and is dedicated to helping new teachers become their very best? Physics Teacher SOS, of course, or PTSOS for short. Our website is under constant revision: http://www.ptsos.org
Paul Robinson, Dean Baird, and Stephanie Finander conducted the first of three New Teacher Workshops September 10th at San Mateo High School as part of the Physics Teacher SOS program. 33 teachers from all over Northern California attended the workshop. Although teachers did not receive a stipend for attending, we gave out over $5,000 of instructional supplies and demonstration equipment. Teachers came from nine different area codes, one from Chico and another from the Sierra foothills (a 3 hour drive). There were 31 high school teachers and two junior high. 13 were women, 20 were men.
In the 2008-2009 academic year, the program has expanded to include workshops in both San Mateo and Sacramento. PTSOS program is funded by a grant from the Karl Brown Foundation.
